A lacquered surface is a film. When the film is scratched or the sun gets under it, the only repair is to strip the whole door and start again, usually in a workshop, usually with the door off its hinges.
An oiled surface is not a film. It is the timber, fed. A scratch is sanded out with a cloth and re-oiled in place in ten minutes. The panel next to it is untouched.
This is the whole argument for the practice, in one cabinet door.
